The Popularity of Purple

Posted: 30th September 2009

Back in March this year we posted an article on our blog discussing the increasing popularity of vibrant coloured rugs and that green was the most popular. Well the past few months have seen a massive surge in the popularity of purple rugs, to the point where they are beginning to outsell green as our most popular vibrant colour. We have responded quickly by introducing some fantastic new designs in purple shades.

Vibrant accent colours are being used more and more in interior design and fashion. This involves using neutral colours in a room then adding a strong vibrant colour making the décor more interesting and visually appearing. The accent colour can be added in a variety of ways but you must be careful not to overuse it. For example the accent colour can be added by wallpapering a ‘feature’ wall as well as furniture and accessories including curtains, sofas, cushions and of course rugs.

This year green has been one of the most popular vibrant colours to use in this way, and whilst it is still popular we are seeing a transition towards purple. Earlier this year interior designers tipped purple to be one of this years hot colours. So what is it about purple that makes this colour so appealing. Hundreds of years ago in Europe both royal families and the catholic church wore purple as it was associated with opulence and luxury. Also Cleopatra’s favourite colour was purple. Purple is a very strong rich colour that can add a look of class and feeling of comfort to a room.

There are many tones of purple which include plum, aubergine, lilac, amethyst, magenta and much more. The most popular purple rugs are currently strong aubergines and deep plums.

Many of our current ranges contain some exciting designs in purple shades. Modern designs include the MA09-946 Wave Purple and the MA09-949 Autumn Plum from our popular matrix wool collection. The Matrix collection also contains some designs which just use purple as an accent colour including the MA09-918 Kew Beige / Plum and MA09-942 Chevron Stone / Plum. Prices start at just £74. For a classic Damask style take a look at the DEC01 Plum and DEC02 Black / Plum from our decadence acrylic range which are available from £94.

We also have some premium quality top end designer rugs in purple. The HAR10 Beige / Claret is a lavishly thick rug made from hand spun wool in a fantastic rustic design. Our Re:fresh and Re:textured ranges of designer wool rugs feature some of the latest fashionable designs in purple tones – see the RF101, RF102, TR126, TR127, TR129 and TR134 rugs.

For something a bit less busy our online shop also features purple rugs in plain coloured designs. Both the Karma KA05 Purple and the Aura AU09-906 Scroll Purple have been especially popular choices for our customers. Both rugs feature a wool pile; the Karma is one of the thickest rugs you can buy; whilst the Aura has a beautiful yet subtle scroll pattern with a shimmering viscose material.

Modern Rugs is famous for its huge selection of shaggy rugs, so as you would expect we have a very large number of shaggy rugs in shades of purple. Amongst the most spectacular are the Whisper Plum, Tangle Purple (pictured below), Twilight Plum. Both the Whisper and Tangle rugs have a super soft synthetic pile constructed from very fine hair like strands. The Twilight also has a very thick and heavy wool like pile yet is made from synthetic fibres also meaning there is no pile shedding. This range also has the advantage of being available in a larger amount of sizes than almost any other shaggy rug range available in the UK. Our finest quality purple shaggy rug has go to be the SK114 Purple from our Silkies range. Each of these rugs is hand knotted with New Zealand wool and rayon silk to create a rug which both looks and feel spectacular. The SK114 Purple has become our best seller in this range.

You will also find a couple of traditional purple rugs within our collections. The TAJ05 Plum is from our Taj Agra range – one of our flagship traditional ranges. These rugs are renowned for there super thick wool pile, high quality construction and stunning traditional Moghal design. The TAJ05 Plum is quite a muted plum colour creating an antique effect which suits this style of rug beautifully.

As previously mentioned we are continuously adding new purple designs to our online rug shop. A couple of the latest additions have been the France Aubergine and the Radical Aubergine. The France Aubergine rug (pictured below) has been introduced into one of our premium designer wool ranges called Taj Palace. It’s modern design is ultra chic and uses a plethora of purple tones to an amazing effect. We are tipping this rug to be one of our next big sellers. The Radical Aubergine (pictured below) is a more affordable modern style rug from our popular Infinite acrylic range. Available from just £39 this rug has a stylish contemporary look which uses a combination of three vibrant purple tones to brilliant effect.

Of course there are many more purple rugs on offer in our online shop. You can use our handy search facility to search for purple rugs as well as narrowing your search down by rug type, size, material and price. And we can guarantee there will be many more purple rugs that will be added to our website over the next few months and into next year as we continue to source the latest fashionable rugs for our customers at the lowest prices.
