Make a Good Impression with a Hall Runner

Posted: 10th September 2009

The majority of homes feature a hallway at main front entrance. Therefore this is the very first interior part of your home that both you and visitors will see. So if you want to make a good first impression this is the place to start.  Hall runners can instantly enhance a hallway, adding some design flair and underfoot comfort.

Here at Modern Rugs we have a large number of hall runners in a variety of designs. Styles include modern, designer, traditional, shaggy and natural fibre hall runners – so finding one to match your hallway couldn’t be easier. However as well as design there are a number of other factors which you must take into consideration when choosing your hall runner.

The first is colour. There is also a wide spectrum of colours available and it is tempting to go for a colour that just matches your décor. What you should also take into account is the use and abuse which the runner may or may not receive. Obviously lighter colours will show and dirt or marks more prominently than a darker colour. So if you envisage that your runner is likely to be walked over often with outdoor footwear it may be more prudent to go for a darker colour to hide any marks. But if you’ve got a very strict ‘shoes off’ policy in your home you may find that you can use a lighter colour without any problems.

Your next consideration is the length of your runner. Most runners have a standard length of around 240cm (approx 7ft 9”). Whilst this length will be suitable for most hallways you may find that you require something a bit shorter or a bit longer so make sure you have a good measure up to see what length will look best in your hallway. Also try to take into consideration any doors which may open up onto the hall runner. Our shortest standard hall runner length is 180cm (approx 6ft) and can be found in our Cuba, Chalet and Super Sisalo collections. Our longest standard hall runner length is 330cm (approx 11ft) and can be found in our Noble Art, Galleria and Arbil collections. If you require something longer than our standard sizes many of our hall runners can be made to custom lengths (and widths also). Just look out for the ‘custom size’ button which will be listed below the standard sizes on each runner enabling you to get a quote for the length you require.

As with rugs, hall runners are also made in a number of materials. This is yet another consideration when choosing a suitable runner. Synthetic hall runners such as polypropylene tend to be very durable as well as being easy to clean and maintain. They are ideal for very high traffic areas which need cleaning regularly. Wool hall runners need a bit more care and maintenance, yet they are thicker, softer and more comfortable than their synthetic counterparts. Another material which is proving to be a very popular choice for hall runners is natural sisal. The popularity of sisal hall runners is down to their fresh natural appearance along with their durability and great value. They also feature an anti-slip backing to stop them from moving on a wood or laminate floor.

Prices range from just £34 for a budget synthetic fibre hall runner up to £199 for a top quality 100% wool hall runner. You will also find that many of our hall runner designs are also available in matching rug sizes. If your home has a small entrance which then leads on to your main hallway you can use a small entrance rug to match your hall runner. Alternatively you may wish to co-ordinate one of your other rooms with your hallway, in which case you may require a larger matching rug size. All of our rugs which come in a matching runner are conveniently grouped together in a section of our online shop named ‘Rugs with Runners’.

So if you want to smarten up your hallway there has never been a bigger and better selection of runners to help you achieve the look you want.
